Savoring Life

Remember my post about Wine Pairing where I mentioned a special Burgundy I had collecting dust at the bottom of my wine rack? Well, I recently went to Florida to celebrate the Big Birthday (a little early) with the BFF & BFFH. I thought it would be the perfect time to take The Burgundy along to open in celebration of the Big Birthday (and conveniently fulfill my promise to share it with the BFF)!

My first sigh of relief was arriving in Florida with the wine safely in one piece and not soaking all the rest of my stuff.

I was a bit trepidatious when it came time to actually open it, as when I cut the foil, I noticed the cork was looking a bit soaked. Crossing my fingers, I inserted the corkscrew and, while holding my breath and perhaps closing my eyes, I pulled gently and out it came–in one piece and smelling amazing.

I poured a sample. Swirl, swirl, swirl. Big breath….mmmm…dirt, as the BFF would say (or, as the rest of the world would say, earthy). Second sigh of relief. The taste was, well, magic.

We gave it a few moments to breathe the fresh air it had been denied for 12 years (helped along with an aerator) and it opened up so beautifully. We had no choice but to just sit there and absorb the moment.

And then…then the BFF announced she needed chocolate. Yes, chocolate–Peruvian dark chocolate fudge, to be exact. The pairing transcended amazing and entered into heavenly.

It was a quiet celebration: no pomp, no circumstance (okay, a bit of tweeting–but that’s it!). Sitting there with these two wonderful friends and sharing this amazing wine reminded me that through all the ups and downs of the last few years, it was moments like these that should be savored–just like a 12 year Burgundy.

Birthdays Galore!

Yesterday started my birthday week. By that, I don’t mean it’s the week of my birthday, but rather: starting yesterday, I have at least one birthday a day until the end of the month (and yes, I know it’s technically 8 days, but channel your inner Beatles and work with me here people!). The only day in this week missing a birthday is the 29th. Anyone out there with a birthday on the 29th? My OCD is wanting the day to be allotted to a birthday! Of course, I have 2 birthdays the day before and 2 birthdays the day after, so I don’t reeeeeeeeally neeeed another birthday…

What birthday week has reminded me is that I’ve been slacking in the post dept! Remember last year’s birthday week? It was a bit crazy–fun, mind you–but crazy. Here they are again, if you wanna relive the magic! Hopefully they are properly linked to magically take you to the original post when you click on it. If not, yell at the technician (that’s me, btw, but alas I’m currently not taking complaints!).

I think birthdays are special–they are the one day a year that’s all about celebrating you. Unless, of course, you are Desire’, who also celebrates her half birthday. Her birthday is in February. February, in case you are unaware, is NOT conducive to sitting outside in NYC, drinking margaritas, eating Mexican food, and not getting frostbite–so we celebrate her birthday in August, when we can do all those things sans the frostbite!

Regardless of when you celebrate, do it in style: like we’ve done in the pic below! It is the pie we ordered for my boss’s birthday: sour cream and apple–The Little Pie Company’s best seller! And for good reason: while it sounds slightly weird, the flavors all meld beautifully together for a heavenly slice of pie…especially when enjoyed a la mode 🙂

The Best Medicine

I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it’s the thing I like the most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It’s probably the most important thing in a person. –Audrey Hepburn

Never underestimate the power of a good, hearty laugh. I’m not talking about a slightly fake he he he. I mean a big-fat-you-can’t-breathe-tears-rolling-down-your-face and-are-about-to-pee-in-your-pants kind of laugh.

I’m very fortunate in that everyone in my life has the ability to make me laugh like that. And that is probably the reason why they are still in my life. So this TBT is honoring the silliness that comes with great friendships. This picture was taken a few years ago at BFF & BFFH’s What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas Wedding.

It was such an amazing few days–and honestly it had nothing to do with the hotel, the food (and when do I ever admit that?!?!?), or the sights. It was quite simply the amazing group of people and non-stop laughter.

It was truly good for the soul.

okay, okay…and the steak tartare wasn’t too shabby either. 😉

40 Til 40!

Time flies when you’re having fun and while it seems surreal, in 40 short days I will be 40.  Surreal because I don’t feel 40.  I’m told I don’t look 40 (of course these people don’t see in first thing in the morning before coffee and with Medusa hair!), but there it is–staring me in the face.  Of course, in the wise words of my BFF’s Grandpa:  it’s much better than the alternative and I heartily agree!

My life has been so crazy and all over the place in the last few years, so I decided what I needed to do was reset my hectic life and focus more on that things that matter.  In that spirit, I’ve decided to celebrate life by counting down to my birthday by sharing some of my favorite things!  Don’t worry, I’ll try to limit the selfies 😉
